Mrs. Gray, a wiry little woman with a mop of curly brown hair, laughs and lets some honey dribble down onto a thin sheet of pastry for a fresh supply of baklava, a rich, Greek dessert which sells well. "We met in Temple (Beth-El in Cape Coral) last summer," she continues.

"My husband and I were in the catering business in New Jersey before we came down here. Shirley and Sol were in the butcher business in Buffalo. Sure, we all came down for the sunshine, but you can't live on sunshine! We decided to open a delicatessen. Sooooo far its (the union) been good." And Julie Gray laughs again. The Grays and the Solo-ways opened The Unusual Deli in the Dragon Plaza, off Cleveland Avenue in south Fort Myers in August of '77.

Today they do a brisk trade. People come into the delicatessen sniffing its fine savory and sweet smells. Some of them stay to drink a cup of coffee or a glassful of pop and eat an omelette or one of the dozens of sandwich selections, or a piece of spinach or cheese pie (otherwise known as quiche) or a dish of one of the deli's 17 salads or a slice of baklava or a piece of Julie's special cheesecake. Others come to purchase salads and meats and cheeses and grape leaves and baklava dough and quiches and cheese cakes to take home. Still others come in or telephone to place party orders.

"We cater to every ethnic taste," says Mrs. Gray. "We do office parties, bar-mitzvahs, weddings, luaus. Anything you want, we do." The Unusual Deli is open Mondays through Saturdays from 8:15 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Sundays the deli is open strictly for catering orders. "On the stroke of 7 (p.m.) we're ready to leave," says days are long, but we have fun.
