22 (JP) The federal grand jury indicted today two Sarasota county commissioners on charges of conspiring to defraud the government by the filing of false certificates with government agencies to purchase surplus property. The indictment named county Commissioners J. Oliver Alderman and Otis B. Howell and Clarence G. Hewitt, St.

Petersburg machinery dealer. The grand jury charged the three falsely filed certificates declaring government goods purchased were for use in Sarasota county thereby gaining purchase priority and then1 reselling the items or diverting them to their own use. The indictment charged the three men, after forming their conspiracy, presented false certificates to such federal agencies as the Department of Commerce, the Reconstruction Finance Corporation, the War Assets Administration and the War Assets Corporation. The grand jury set out that the group purchased for resale cr for their own use two half-ton pickup trucks, a back-hoe machine, a dragline and an air compressor. One of the trucks, said the indictment, was purchased for $317 and allegedly sold for $685.

The back-hoe, for which $3,616 was paid was sold for $6,053 and the air compressor, obtained for sold for $2,500.
