Box CC Fort Myers, Fla. 33902 0 Lads at Eton Learn Community Lessons TONBRIDGE, England (AP) New kinds of English battles may be won on the playing fields of Eton because a 45-year-old classics scholar thinks the young should be sensitive, scholar and is concerned. Michael McCrum, headmaster of Tonbridge School who will take over in September as headmaster of Eton, the famed educational incubator of Britain's Establishment. "I think community participation is extremely said McCrum, under whose guidance teenaged Tonbridge students are caring for the blind, renovating an old house, aiding the handicapped and poor. "A couple of the boys found a blind man and took over caring for him," said McCrum.

"They learned more social sensitivity than they could possibly have learned in books." And here in this 11th century market town, McCrum's "sensitivity" works both ways. "I can remember when I was a young man," said the father of two Tonbridge graduates. "The hatred between the town and the Nixon Plans No 1970 Campaign BELLEVILLE, Ill. (P President Nixon said Thursday he plans no 1970 campaign speeches. He said he feels he can best serve Republican candidates by making "as good a record as possible in Washington." In an informal interview with a group of newsmen as he prepared to leave nearby Scott Air Force Base for his California home, Nixon said international affairs must take priority over any personal campaigning this fall.

"I have no plans for any speeches in October," he said. Any involvement by him in this year's elections, he said, would depend on international developments in September and October. He said he thought his first course was to make a good record in the White House on both the foreign and domestic fronts. Nixon had appeared earlier in St. Louis where he addressed the 50th anniversary convention of the U.

S. Jaycees. school was open and obvious. Now the school is very much a part of the town." Because of McCrum's passion for melding town and school, in the coming years, similar changes may come to ancient Eton. Until September, when McCrum becomes headmaster of King's College of Our Lady of Eton Beside Windsor- -the original school title bestowed by King Henry VI, Eton's founder -he stoutly refuses to discuss possible changes.

"I can tell you what I have done in the past," he said, "but I am not going to circumscribe myself now by saying what I Eton's new headmaster makes a deceptive progressive. He doesn't come Davis Is Happy As Patrol Chief TALLAHASSEE. (P) Some 12. to-15 persons are on the candidate list for the job of state purchasing director and Highway Patrol Chief Ralph Davis isn't one of them, General Services Director Chester Blakemore said Thursday. "Davis has a job," and doesn't want to be purchasing chief, Blakemore said, squelching any possible behind-the-scenes move to edge Davis out of his present job and give him another.

"He (Davis) told me very frankly 'I have a think is a great He said he wasn't interested in the purchasing job," Blakemore said. Blakemore's report dashed water on speculation that Davis would be considered a top candidate to succeed Al Day, who recently resigned as head of the state purchasing division under Blakemore's Department of General Services. GINGER" "FRAGRANT MEMORIES LINGER" We Wire Flewers In The Free Nite Sunday 936-0801 2nd at Fowler ED 5-2571 bursting forth as an educational reformer. He looks like a former naval officer, which he is, and talks like a Cambridge graduate, which he one who graduated with high honors in classics. Despite substantial pressure to the contrary, McCrum believes in caning as a school punishment.

"Sometimes it is the lesser of two evils and the kinder course action," said the headmaster who gives students a choice: the cane or temporary expulsion. Often the students choose the cane, he said. "It isn't used often," McCrum continued. "With 578 students, it's used only about 10 times a term." Despite a traditionalist bent, McCrum is more than open to new ideas. An example of this occurred recently when McCrum remained placidly unmoved when a 16-year-old, leading prayers at Tonbridge, told his student audience that Christmas is a religious anachronism that should be devoted to helping people rather than buying presents.

In another break with conformity, he agreed to more freedom in dress, and even permitted polling of students to see if they wanted to keep their traditional boater hats, which they did. "A uniform gives a sense of belonging," he said. "We all want to belong to something." McCrum's Tonbridge policies could be a tipoff: Eton's traditional top hat and tails will remain, while freedom to discard the uniform in the evening, to attend movies and to visit nearby London may be in the offing for Eton's 1,200 boys.
