NEWS-PRESS, MONDAY, JULY 26, 1 999 CAPE 1 Cape Coral Cycling can help weight loss, muscle tone and attitude UPCOMING RIDES yw The less weight you cany on your bicycle, the faster and easier you will ride. It is obvious that the less weight you have to push around, the easier pedaljng will become. A run-of-the-mill bike probably weighs a whopping 30 to 35 pounds. If Your new featherweight bike will weigh about 20 pounds, reducing the overall weight by up to 15 pounds, a significant reduction. The size of your wallet will be reduced, too.

This featherweight machine will set you back about $4,000. A much more effective way to reduce your cycling package is to take the weight off your body. I know diet is a four-letter word, but it is much healthier for you and your wallet to lose 15 pounds of body weight than to spend a fortune on a new bike. There are other benefits as well. The more streamlined you are, the more efficiently your cardiovascular system will work.

Your muscles, used to carrying around an extra 15 pounds, will now be able to propel your svelte body forward much faster. Not only will you ride better, you will look a whole lot nicer in those skintight cycling shorts. Probably the most effective way to lose weight is to reduce calories and to exercise, exercise, exercise. What you need to do, according to every source I have read, is reduce your percentage of body fat while retaining or building muscles. The experts say the more muscle you have, the more calories you will burn, even in a resting state.

Cycling is a non-weight bearing activity, so you can ride a bicycle without stressing your joints, no matter how much you weigh. Figure that you will burn approximately 10 calories each minute you are on your bike, So, in the theory, ride for an hour and you will burn 600 calories. Do this six days a week and you will burn 3,600 calories. Since there are 3,500 calories in a pound, you will lose a pound a week if your eating pattern stays the same. In other words, for every six hours you are on your bike, you will lose one pound.

Riding your bike is a win-win situatioa Not only will you reduce your body fat and improve your muscle tone, your cardiovascular system will get stronger and more efficient. You will have more energy and probably a better outlook on life. Besides all that good stuff, you will have a good time, especially if you ride with friends. To use that old cliche, try it, folks. You will probably like it.
