Frank Tipton Birk, former commander of a B-2 stealth bomber test group, died Monday in Germany of injuries suffered six days earlier in a plane crash.

He was 46. Birk, a retired Air Force colonel, became a senior engineering test pilot for Rockwell in June and was testing the Ranger 2000 jet when it crashed. Birk flew more than 800 combat missions in Vietnam, earning two Silver Stars, two Distinguished Flying Crosses, 27 Air Medals and the Purple Heart.
