and Mrs. Carl Sherman, the catches of shrimp off Mayport were less than expected. Two trawlurs of the Vickers fleet returned to the Beach late last week from St. Marys, where they have been for the past two months. They were the Sua Robin and the Camaroon.

These boats were among the first on the Tortugas beds after their discovery early in the year. Chip Vickers was at the Beach Wednesday when his boats arrived to be iced and returned to St. Marys Thursday. Local boys make up the crew of the trawler Sea Robin. Jim Poul-ton is now captain.

Dick Young and Bob Canady make up the crew. Aubrey E. Messina, who is partner with Frank Hanneberger and Frank Fant in the St. George Packing Company plant on San Carlos Island is now here permanently and is living in Fort Myers. July 2 W) The Panama Canal marine bureau announced today that all ships arriving at Canal terminal harbors will be required to identify themselves before traversing the big ditch. In addition, the bureau said, strict compliance with all canal regulations will be required, including one directing ships to give 48 hours notice of their prospective arrival. The U. B. KAVANAUcill Shrimp unloadings lit Fort My-en Beach dock increased sharply last week as 21 trawlen pulled in with 47,603 pound. ThU con-traated with a record low of 16,812 poundi two weeks ago, The arrival of two new fleets and the return of ome boats from the East Coast accounted for the Increase. Nearly all of the Fer-gerson fleet arrived as did the Sarah the first of a four-boat fleet operated by the Belhaven Fish and Oyster Company of Bel-hsven, N.C. The Sarah which docked with 4,125 pounds, ts a "Beam" trawler, larger than is usually seen in these parts.

She is 84 feet long: by 19 foot beam by 9 feet draft. She carries her rig forward of the deck house and is powered with a 200 horsepower Superior diesel. Her skipper is Capt. Harry Merrill and her crew is composed of Rodney Merrill, Zonnie Merrill, Frank Merrill and John Keech, Her sister ships, which will soon be are the Bud A Doris, the Randlyn and the Ethyl Stow-man. The ships are owned by Clyde Potter and in the past the Sarah has fished the Grand Banks off Gloucester, Mass.

On the Tortugas beds the Sarah drags a 85 foot full balloon net Her average take on her last trip was 412 pounds per night, which her skipper claims is rather low. The Potter fleet has been unloading its catches in the past at Cortez on Tampa bay. A large part of the Singleton fleet which left the Beach for Mayport about there weeks ago is now back on the Tortugas grounds and is expected in with catches this week. The Sportsman, the Markie Singleton and the Penny Singleton docked at Fort Myers early last week for ice and proceeded directly to Tortugas. H.

Hugh Stump Jr. and Glover Stump of Fort Myers, fishing out of Snug Harbor on Walter Bos-tick's Boby, landed two tarpon weighing 60 and 45 pounds.

These fish were taken off Sanibel and produced 23 Jumps before being boated. Fred, Garry and Roland Hille-brand of Cincinnati and Jim Troop of Miami, fishing with Tom Bill Green, caught a 45-pound tarpon and an assortment of snook, trout and snapper. The tarpon was landed off Sanibel. Mrs. Edith Streetman and Mr.

and Mrs. Harry Godwin of Ft. Meade, who are staying at the Island Inn on Sanibel were fishing in Redfish Pass last week with Jake Stokes in his Miss Susie Two, when Mrs. Streetman hooked and boated a 71-pound tarpon after 14 jumps and 18 minutes of battle. This fish won for her the June prize of a case of sparkling burgundy in the Jenks Tarpon Rodeo.

The Jenks Rodeo will continue through until Aug. 15 with case goods prizes for those entering the largest tarpon during July and for the first two weeks of August. Mrs. Clyde Crawford won a Snug Harbor citation Friday when she entered and took the lead in the snook division of the Harbor contest with a 21 pounder which she caught off the drawbridge at the Beach. Census Bureau May Check Count in Jax Jacksonville, July 2 (P) The census bureau will check against its count the names of any Jaxons submitted with evidence they were omitted, Rep. Charles Bennett said today. Jacksonville officials pro tested when tha preliminary count was released Friday night showing the city has only 198,880 persons.

Rep. Bennett, in Florida for the holiday weekend, said the census bureau advised: "Our business is to get an accurate count of the popu lation and we have well-established procedures for checking census figures." if it is shown that many per sons were omitted, the census bu reau will check its workers here. And if lists of many enumerators are found inaccurate an entire new census is conceivable, the congress A. Kinney Griffith, for several years a resident of Fort Myers, has been appointed manager of the McDowell Fish Company plant. Ralph Mulford's Commodore Perry, which with the trawler Bertha is the only boat owned by Lee County residents, has a new skipper, lie is Capt.

Floyd Lee, who formerly captained the trawler Bernice, owned by George G. Dodge. The Commodore has been tied up at the King Harbor dock for some time due to lack of crew. She put out late last week under her new skipper. The Bernice's new captain is George Lanier of Punta Gorda who was a crew member before Captain Lee left his post as skipper to take over the Commodore Ferry.

Captain Lee says that he plans to buy a home on the Beach. Mrs. Lee and daughter Janet have been living here for some time. It is reported that the Parnell trawlers, Wally Parnell and she Parnell, passed Key West on theTf way to the Tortugas beds from Mayport. They are expected to use the Beach as their unloading port as in the past.

Captain Clem Bowen of the Miss Columbia on his arrival last week said that there are many more trawlers working the beds than during the past few weeks. The greatest activity at Beach facilities was at the St. George Packing Company dock where 11 of the 21 arriving docked. The Nan Jack unloaded 1,760 pounds, Sheila 2,070, Cathie 2,985, Libby Anne 3,250, Mary Lee 2nd 3,050, Jeanne 2,960, Bernard Stanton 2,375, and the Helen A S85 pounds. These boats are all members of the Fergerson fleet.

The Captain Kidd briught in 2,200 ponds, Dixie Girl 1,965 and the Blackbeard 1,830. At the McDowell Fish Company dock the Miss Queeaie brought in 1,685 pounds and Fairweather 2,450 pounds. Capt Leon "Bubba" Canova docked 2,160 pounds at the Dixie Fish Company and Miss Pat unloaded 1,390 pound. Tha Columbia Fish Company unleaded Miss Columbia with 2,400, Big Chief with 2,425 and Noah's Ark with 2,228 pounds. The Little Mary docked 1,200 pounds and the Fred F.

Sanders 2,210 at the new George G. Dodge facilities. COLORADO POPULATION Denver. July 2 JP A com plete unofficial census tabulation showed today that Colorado's dod- ulation has increased by 191,092 since 1940. The unofficial count is 1,314,388 compared with the official census figure of 1.123.29A in 1940.

Denver, the state capital, showed a jump to 412,823 from 322,412 in 1940.
