Fort Myers News-Press, Friday, November 1, 1985 Killer caught after 30 years to be released WEST PALM BEACH (AP) A murderer who escaped from a Florida jail 30 years ago and lived a straight life before being recaptured in April will be released in three weeks, a state commission says. The Parole and Probation Commission decided Wednesday free 62-year-old Lonnie Bell Batten. Jr. on Nov. 19.

Batten is being held at the Marion Correctional Institution in Lowell. "I sure do appreciate it," said Batten, who cried upon learning of the decision. "Tell (my mother) I'll be glad to get home so I can be there with her." Probation Commissioner E. Guy Revell Jr. said the decision to free Baten was an easy one.

"We're charged to find people who are good parole risks," he said. don't know how many people could say that in the last 30 years they haven't been picked up for even a traffic ticket." Batten shot and killed his girlfriend Gladys Ross in April 1952. He pleaded guilty to manslaughter charges and was sentenced to 20 years in state prison. He escaped on June 26, 1955 and fled to North Carolina. He moved to Deerfield Beach in 1972, and worked at Royal Palm Yacht and Country Club in Boca Raton for 10 years.

He was mowing the 18th green on April 12 when U.S. marshals arrested him. Three arrested, accused of fake kidnapping MIAMI BEACH (AP) Two men and a woman were arrested on extortion and drug charges, accused of faking a kidnapping in order to collect a ransom from relatives of the "victim," the FBI said Thursday. One of the three, Asdrubal Romanovich, a 42-year-old Colombian, wrote letters to relatives that he was being held against his will for ransom. Photos also were sent making it look like Romanovich had been beaten and handcuffed, and a weapon was held against his head, said Special Agent Joseph Corless, in charge of the Miami FBI office.

Arrested Thursday night with Romanovich were Jaime Montoya, 33, of Bowling Green, Ohio, and Martha Puerta, 32, of Miami Beach, Corless said. The group was charged with extortion, conspiracy and possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, the FBI reported. When agents made the arrests on a Miami Beach street, the alleged abduction was being discussed on the telephone with one of Romanovich's relatives, Corless said.
