6B NEWS-PRESS, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 10, 1996 GOLF Romancing Augusta National: Love hasn't conquered yet Last year's Masters gave him hope that something will be done about it very soon. He shot four straight sub-par rounds, including a final round 6-un-der-par 66, only to lose to Ben Crenshaw by a stroke. Love didn't lose the Masters. Crenshaw won it. "It's a different feeling when you get down to the end of a major," Love said.

"Sometimes your desire to win makes you too excited, too nervous and you get in your own way. You try to tell yourself it's just another tournament but it's not. Your emotions get away from you. It's something you have to conquer." The North Carolinian's best year was 1992 when he won three times, including the Players Championship. The 31-year-old Love has won 11 tournaments but until the 1995 Masters had been a big bust in the majors.

He went all of 1994 without making the cut in a major. In his first 27 majors, Love missed 10 cuts and never finished better than 1 1th in the 1991 U.S. Open. In 1995, he had to win the week before the Masters at New Orleans just to qualify forthe tournament. "Last year showed me what I can do, how I can handle the pressure down the stretch," Love said.

"It meant a lot to me to hang in there with Ben. It was my first real run at a major. I shot the low round of the day playing with Greg Norman then walked off 18 with a chance to win. I liked the feeling. I liked the taste.

I want to do it again." Love, who also tied for fourth in the 1995 U.S. Open, is one of the longest hitters on tour. He is one of the best iron players and has a solid short game except for occasional lapses on short putts. The death of Davis Love II, his father and teacher, in a plane crash was a setback, but Love has begun to emerge as a patient player, one who can think his way around the course. "I work hard on my game now because I know that's what It will take to win a major," Love said.

"Getting close at the Masters has made me want to work harder." Love hears the remarks about his overall poor record in majors. "I've played 10 years and if I go another 10 years and don't win a major then I'll feel like I left something out there," Love said. "But I have a lot more confidence now than I've had before. I know I can do it." Augusta National Golf Club is a perfect setup for Love. He can reach the par-5s with iron second shots.

He hits the ball high which is a necessity because of the normally hard and fast greens. He can draw the ball which also Is an advantage because the course plays easiest for a player with a hook. "I feel comfortable here," Love said. "This is my seventh Masters. I know my way around.

It's time to win." Or, as his critics would say, about time. By DENNE FREEMAN The Associated Press AUGUSTA, Ga. He's made $6 million and has a picture perfect swing. So why is Davis Love III still considered an underachieved Because he has Inherited the dubious label of "the best golfer never to win a major." Nick Price, Fred Couples, Tom Kite and Corey Pavin all had it. They all had the terrible tag of major col-lapsers at one time in their careers.

Now, the burning brand of talent squandered is Love's burden to bear. Stumbling Norman perks up for Masters By DOUG FERGUSON The Associated Press AUGUSTA, Ga. Relaxed and smiling, Greg Norman didn't look anything like a man who had missed his last two cuts coming into the tournament that he wants more than any other, one that has wrought so much anguish. The Masters has a way of stoking his fire as brightly as the azaleas in "0 1 full bloom at Augusta National. All it took was one short practice round for Norman to proclaim his two-week mental funk behind him, and his best golf to come maybe even this wppk to put him in contention again for what has become an elusive Masters title.

Sure, Norman has come close at the U.S. Open and the PGA Championship he's lost in a playoff in all four majors but something about Augusta has got him vexed. It seems like longer than 16 years ago when he first arrived, still a mystery name on a leaderboard topped by Tom Watson, Jack Nicklaus and Johnny Miller. Although he finished fourth that year, he figured to have a closet full of green jackets by the time he was through. There was 1986, when he needed a par to force a playoff with Nicklaus, only to sail his approach over the 1 8th green in taking a bogey.

A year later, he was victim of Larry Mize's 140-foot miracle chip on the second playoff hole. He played superbly on the weekend the next two years, but poor starts left him too far behind to catch up. And when he moved into position last year, he failed to come up with a badly needed birdie on No. 17 after having a sand wedge to the green. "You guys are making it sound like this is my last time I'm ever going to get a chance to win the Masters," he said with a confident grin.

"My golfing career is not over. You have just to chase that elusive rainbow. If you get it one day, you feel a great sense of satisfaction." Togeir's Phenom maturing By PAUL NEWBERRY The Associated Press AUGUSTA, Ga. Tiger Woods grimaced as his tee shot on the sec-ond hole at Augusta National streaked into the pine trees and dogwoods that line the left side of the fairway. It was only a practice session, but Tuesday wasn't a time to be taking mulligans, not with the Masters only two days away.

"I've got to play It where it lies," he said, so the fans shuffled out of the way to give Woods an opening to hit through. His club lifted the ball off the pine straw and sent it hurtling into a sharp left turn, not unlike the hooks fired by so many weekend hackers. Even though the ball landed in a bunker along the right side of the green, at least Woods could see the hole now. Wood blasted out of the bunker to within 12 feet of the hole and made the putt. Just another trees-to-sand birdie.

"He's gotten better," said Greg Norman, who played with Woods during practice sessions Monday and Tuesday. "He's got his iron play more under control. "He's exceptionally long. I think he's longer than John Daly, I really do." A year after his memorable first appearance in the Masters, the country's most famous amateur golfer is back again wiser, stronger, more determined. "I think last year was a little different because I'd never been here before," he said.

"I didn't know what to expect. All I could do was watch on TV and see what those guys go through." Now he's playing alongside the biggest names in golf. Monday, he played a practice round with Norman. Tuesday, he was back on the course with Norman, Fred Couples and Raymond Floyd. Today, he's scheduled to play a final round of practice with Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer.

"These guys know the course like the back of their hand," said Woods, 20. "I was listening to Raymond give Norman some pointers out there. NORMAN "There's no other golf tournament anywhere in the world that generates the type of feeling that happens here at Augusta National," he said Tuesday. "You feel like the excitement of the moment will probably get you going again. It's sometimes hard to flick that switch back on and get it going.

"I've flicked the switch, definitely." And he thinks that will be enough Norman favorite to win News-Press wire services i i ill nrr'nr-i nrm i t.y.r.. "Seriously, it's neat looking at all the changes that happen over the years with She golf course, how many different ways it can play and where they can hide these pins around here Only a bedeviling short game his iron shots were too long kept him from contending. Still, he was the only amateur to make the cut and finished with a 5-over 2931 Woods earned a return trip to Augusta by repeating as U.S.

amateur champion. At Christmas, he bor Greg Norman is the 5-1 favorite in the Las Vegas sports books to win this week's Masters. Norman tops the list of players at the Palace Station hotel-casino sports book, with Fred Couples next at 6-1. Corey Pavin is listed at 7-1, while Phil Mickelson is a 10-f bet to'win his first major title this week. Defending champion Ben Crenshaw is a 30-1 pick.

Jack Nicklaus, who had been a 75-1 long shot, dropped to 30-1 after winning the Senior PGA Tour's The Tradition over the weekend. The Masters tournament committee has tried to make the par-5 13th hole even more intriguing by lowering the water level in Rae's Creek in front of the green. In the previous 10 years, the water level was high enough that any shot that landed in it was unplayable, resulting in a penalty. The water now is shallow enough that those daring enough have the option of trying to play shots from it, as Curtis Strange did unsuccessfully at the 1985 Masters. It was from this creek bed that Strange's Masters bid vanished.

In the final round, he went for the green, but hit his second shot in the creek. He attempted to blast his ball out of the water and onto the green. He failed, and his resultant double-bogey dropped him from contention. Greg's been out here for a few years and has done pretty well here. And (Floyd) was telling Greg some of the idiosyncrasies Greg didn't even knowabout." Vr' Despite his unfamiliarity with the whole Masters experience last year, Woods showed remarkable composure in the face of intense media scrutiny and fan attention.

His booming drives off the tee left the crowd astonished, and his touch on the icy greens was amazing for someone who had never played at Augusta National. and how you attack them." While the hype has subsided somewhat for Woods' second Masters, he still is wrapped in an aura unlike anyone in the game except for the Nicklauses and Normans. As he strolls the course, the fans, almost in unison, begin murmuring, "It's rowed his father's collection of Masters tapes, which go back to the 1978 tournament, and began studying them between his classwork at Stanford. "It's fun looking back at the fashions in those days, all the frills and LEGAL NOTICE LEGAL NOTICE LEGAL NOTICE LEGAL NOTICE LEGAL NOTICE LEGAL NOTICE legal NOTICE LEGAL NOTICE LEGAL NOTICE LEGAL NOTICE decedent and other the date bids are There will be a Dre-bid according to the plat thereof as recorded in and residence(s) isare as follows: conference held at The persons having claims or demands aaainst de Plat Book 14, Page ll.
