Bush told 1,375 people at the National Religious Broadcasters convention that Gallup surveys indicate "no society is more religious than the United States of America. "Seven in 10 Americans believe In life after death, eight In 10 that God works miracles, nine in 10 Americans pray," said the president. "And more than 90 percent believe In God, to which I say, thank God. I wish it were 100 percent" Four die in plane crash LAS VEGAS The wreckage of a missing private plane has been found in the desert near the Nevada-California state line, authorities said Monday.

All four people on board were killed, officials said. The four-seat Piper Warrior had taken off Saturday from Bullhead City, across the Colorado River from the gambling center of Laughlin, en route to Rialto, Calif. World checker king PETAL, Miss. Charles Walker has reclaimed his title as world checker king by playing 229 games simultaneously, defeating 227 contestants, losing one contest and tying one. "I am going home and eat me a steak," Walker said after completing his last match of the day at the National Checker Hall of Fame in this suburb of Hattiesburg.

"After dinner I am going right to sleep because I have been on my feet all day." That was eight hours of steady play. Justice to join probe BIRMINGHAM, Ala. The Justice Department will send special investigators to help in a probe of possible corruption in City Hall, Mayor Richard Arrington said Monday Arrington, who went to prison to dramatize his claim that the Birmingham U.S. attorney's office singled him out because he's black, made the announcement at a news conference attended by the Rev. Jesse -i- By NORM BREWER Gannett News Service Bill Clinton's accuser, Gennifer Flowers, Insisted again Monday she had a love affair with the Democratic presidential hopeful.

"He Is absolutely lying," she declared of the Arkansas governor's denials. One day after Clinton's extraordinary appearance with his wife on CBS-TV's "60 Minutes" in an effort to blunt Flowers' allegations, the part-time cabaret singer reiterated: "I was Bill Clinton's lover for 1 2 years and for the past two years I have lied to the press about our relationship." Clinton, campaigning in the South, continued to declare he had dealt with the infidelity charge and it now was behind him. "I'm just telling you I've said everything I've got to say about it," he declared. Speaking in Baton Rouge, after Flowers' interview, Clinton said, "She didn't tell the truth. She's admitted she changed her position for money." The cool performance at a raucus New York news conference by Flowers, an Arkansas state employee, raised the ante for Clinton.

Before Flowers went CLINTON public with her story last week in the "Star," a supermarket tabloid which paid her an undisclosed amount, Clinton was the Democratic presidential front-runner. Now some in his party wonder if they should start a late search for another candidate. 1 The Associated Press Gennifer Flowers speaks to reporters Monday about her claim of a 12-year affair with Democratic presidential hopeful Gov. Bill Clinton of Arkansas. But other Democrats believe the unproved charges against Clinton have offended America's sense of fairness and privacy.

"People are mad that that kind of stuff happens to people who run for office," said Max Cleland, Georgia secretary of state who backs the presidential bid of Nebraska Sen. Bob Kerrey. "People have a certain sense of limits, and (the charges) will backfire in his (Clinton's) favor." Interviews with 10 people questioned last month in a Gannett News Service poll also showed a willingness to give Clinton the benefit of any doubt, and even if Flowers' charges are true to not summarily disqualify him. Fifty-three percent of those questioned in the poll said it was important to them to know whether a candidate had committed adultery. Forty-three percent said it was not.

Flowers, a stylish blonde reportedly in her 30s, refused to say how much the Star paid her, but said she went public after Clinton denied the affair. While acknowledging "wrongdoing" on "60 Minutes," Clinton called hera "friendly acquaintance." "I felt disgusted," Flowers said. "The truth is I loved him. Now he tells me to deny-it. He is absolutely lying." return Wednesday.

Discovery gets extra day in space The Associated Press Former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson is seen Monday at the Marion County Superior Court in Indianapolis, for his trial on rape.

JURY SELECTIOfl Here's a sampling of queries posed by trial attorneys in the Mike Tyson trial Monday: Have you or any family member ever been a member of or contributed money to the National Organization for Women or other organizations interested in women's issues? Have you ever played i professional sports? What have you read or heard about the rape allegations I against Tyson? Have you formed an opinion about Tyson or this case? Could you ignore what you've heard about the case and decide on the evidence presented in court? What do you think of lawyers? Have you ever been arrested? Have you ever been a victim of domestic violence? Do you consider yourself to be more a thinking person or a feeling person? r- It a. turn Five jurors chosen during opening day More coverage 1C By JAMES GRASS Gannett News Service INDIANAPOLIS Lawyers began selecting jurors Monday for the rape trial of boxer Mike Tyson, kicking off the latest, most serious challenge facing the troubled former heavyweight champion. Five jurors were chosen by day's end. Several other potential jurors were dismissed, including one woman whose daughter was raped six years ago. The jury is to consist of 12 persons and four alternates from a pool of 130 prospective jurors, who answered a 14-page questionnaire before reporting for duty.

Tyson, 25, showed little emotion during the day-long proceedings. Wearing a conservative black suit, he appeared relaxed and spent time writing in a legal pad when not huddling with his Washington attorney, Vincent Fuller. He showed no emotion when the name of the alleged victim and his celebrity status were mentioned. Promoter Don King, who escorted Tyson to the courthouse but did not attend the courtroom activities, proclaimed his innocence in an impromptu press conference. "Mike Tyson believes in America, just like I do; we have the highest form of optimism in the American way," he said.

"It's justamatteroftime." Tyson is on trial for charges stemming from a July 19 incident involving an 18-year-old contestant in the Miss Black America beauty pageant. If convicted, he could face up to 63 years in prison on one charge of rape, one of confinement and two counts of criminal deviate conduct. He is accused of attacking the woman after she was invited to his Indianapolis hotel room at about 1:30 a.m. Tyson said the woman consented to have sex after he met her at a pageant event. The trial before Superior Court Judge Patricia Gifford is expected to last three weeks.

Monday's session opened with a media crunch in the lobby of the Marion County City-County Building. More than 160 reporters from 100 media organizations staked out the building's main entrance while awaiting Tyson.
