SURGEON GENERAL'S Cigarette Smoke Contains Carbon Monoxide. I am writing to endorse Carlo C. Lane for the school board seat in District 5. I am very aware of his concerns for the truly drug free schools and his concern for treatment of employees, especially minorities. I know Carlo has a genuine interest in getting what needs to be done, done.

Those already on board know it, but do other things first. There is no excuse for our schools graduating a student who cannot read, or one who cannot give change from a $20 bill on a $5.95 item. i Knowing a problem exists and getting something done about it are two separate issues. Getting to the root of the problem and getting something done to resolve it is Carlo's goal. We're all tired of a school board who simply has credentials and does nothing but talk about what they achieved.

It's time to act on behalf of our students and the employers. Changes are needed and Carlo C. Lane is the man to get them made. Vote Carlo C. Lane, Democrat, to the Lee County School Board.

DEBORAH C. JACKSON Lehigh Acres Enclave of the rich Yesterday, I read this: "When impact fees are added to the assessments, the cost for an average property owner receiving water and sewers rises to about $10,000. Residents will get the option of paying the assessments in one lump sum or in eight and 15-year financing plans." This is people who live in Cape Coral. I can't believe how the leaders of this city have tried to mold it into an older, rich man's place to live. My husband's family was here before Cape Coral began.

(Remember the "monkey farm" on Pine island Road?) The ones who began Cape Coral started this city for the retired people to come to. They have used rules and regulations to try and keep it that way. Now it seems they want only the rich to live here. How do they expect an older person on a fixed income or a young person just starting out to Jay this kind of money? And if we do we lose everything because Df it? NENA FILBERT Cape Coral Median a mess It would be a worthwhile commu-lity service if the News-Press would periodically give publicity to those nstitutions and businesses who have lone something to enhance the beau-y of our area. The new Merchants Bank and buildings at the Bell Tow-r are an outstanding example, hese buildings are beautiful exam-les of Spanish-style architecture un-jrpassed in Southwest Florida, and ie landscaping surrounding them is aperb.

The merchants on the north side the Bell Tower area have done 3thing to Big Pine Way, the boule-ard that serves them. The median is ogged with overgrown weeds, trash id a clutter of loose railroad ties, he sprinkler system has been aban-)ned and the trees and flowers once anted there have perished. Those sponsible should be ashamed! ALBERT C.MCCANN Fort Myers iive Lincoln attention As for the renaming Anderson 'enue (State Road 82) in honor of late Dr. Martin Luther King, it aves some important, if not serious estions unanswered. Was a formal poll conducted? If one should be, which would al-v for more citizen involvement.

will the acquisition of land on north side of Anderson for wid-ing purposes affect the of displaced businesses? cording to present zoning, and af-1 the widening, will there be augh land to build or rebuild on, i will the land that is available be it prohibitive? In the renaming process, was any nsideration given to Lincoln alevard? This beautiful parkway ar more befitting of such an hon-and it is as old as Anderson Ave-i. Even the possibility of making coin Boulevard more beautiful aid cost the taxpayers far less ney. It is the opinion of myself and ers, regarding this issue, that nging the name of Anderson Ave-! will not change deep-seated atti-ss that have existed for decades. I take a look at Anderson Avenue are and after the recent wid-ig. Give Lincoln Boulevard a nee, esthetically speaking, and In 5 we all will be proud.
