If calculated as a portion of an 8-hour work day, taxes would take 2 hours and 40 minutes of the average Floridian's daily wages four minutes more than last year. Taxes are by far the largest expense for the average Floridian, who would spend 1 hour and 22 minutes per 8-hour day to earn money for housing and utilities, and 54 minutes to earn money for food, TaxWatch calculated. Local taxes have grown the most for 1993, rising 10.4 percent from last year. State taxes are up 9.2 percent and federal taxes are up 9 percent, the group said.

Floridians statewide will pay an estimated $90.2 billion in taxes for the year, more than a third of the state's $265 billion in personal income. TALLAHASSEE Today is the latest Florida "tax freedom day" on record since a watchdog group began counting the days people must work to pay the amounts levied by their federal, state and local governments. The average Floridian has to work 121 of the 365 days this year to pay those taxes, two days more than last year, according to the non-profit research group Florida TaxWatch. Since the group began keeping track in 1977, the previous record was 120 days in 1988, TaxWatch President Dominic Calabro said Friday. "The federal tax bite comprises the lion's share but the local share has been growing steadily," Calabro said.

The average Floridian's total tax burden is $6,641, up 7.5 percent from last year following a mere 2 percent rise each of the DEATHS, FUNERALS Information in the Deaths and Funerals column is paid advertising.
