The fast growing settlement ot Woodrow', on the north side of the Caloosahatchee was the scene on Saturday of one of the most enthusiastic and instructive meetings ever held in the occasion being a picnic given under the auspices of the truckers' committee of the Ill-County Improvement Association, which is ec posed of many of the new settlers on the line of Lee and DeSoto counties; an organization which has for its purpose the betterment of conditions met with in a new country by new citizens and the association, which is officered by some of the best citizenship of lie middle Stales, is doing' a grout work. K. MeQuarrio and l'rof. A. P. Spencer, interesting speakers from the State university at Gainesville, and Joseph Crews of Wauchiila, a wide-awake "Florida Cracker," who is doing good work as agricultural demonstrator for DeSoto county, and who was accompanied by Hon.

Frank Cooper of Punta Gorda, State Senator from DeSoto, and one of the best known men of South Florida. l'rof. McQtiariie Speaks. The meeting was held in the Wood-row packing house, near the depot, and at 10:30 the meeting was called to order by II. A.

Smith of the truckers' committee, who stated the purpose of the gathering, which was intended first as a "get together and get acquainted" meeting for the new settlers, who could listen to instructive lectures by men sent out by the State to assist the farmers. Chairman Smith introduced Prof. McQuar-rle who lost no time in winning his way into the hearts of his audience by his earnest words of encouragement, his subject being one that appealed at once to the farmers, old and new alike, his subject, "Sweet Potatoes" being of general interest. Prof. Me-nuarrie told of the work being done audience; to plant the known crops that would find ready sale, and not to try the crops they had been growing in the North except in a small way, and he becd the citizens to unite in growing such crops as would allow of car lots being shipped, s0 as t0 obtain the best rates.

Mr. Crews was plied with numerous questions, all of which lie answered to the satisfaction of his audience, his advice being well received. Spencer oil I'ontgc Crops. Prof. Spencer followed Mr.

Crews, and a better man couui not be found titan -i his able and intelligent worker, who took as his subject, "Forage Crops." Prof. Spencer went into the subject in a very thorough manner, and urged the planting of forage crops that had been tried in this State and found successful, and explained the sorts to plant on the various lands, as he had seen them in and about Woodrow. In answering the frequent questions, Prof. Spencer demonstrate! his ability as an agriculturist, and won much praise. In the afternoon the program was continued, following one of the most delightful picnic dinners ever attended by the writer, the subjects being along similar lines as in the morning.

Prof. Spencer (spoke on "Canning Clubs," and the results being obtained by the boys and girls of Florida, aided by the university at Gainesville. Mr. Crewg following with an interesting address on "Citrus Groves," in which has has had much experience, and was followed by a short address by Senator Cooper and Mr. Carrier of Punta Gorda, who ndded force to the good words of council given the settlers.
