6B NEWS-PRESS, TUESDAY. SEPTEMBER 26, 1989 Joseph Boerman, 68, loved people Name: Joseph Boerman Date of birth: July 28, 1921 Date of death: Sept. 23, 1989 Cause of death: Heart attack Occupation: Retired foreman Came to Punta Gorda: 1984 Previous residence: Illinois Survivors include: his wife, Carolyn Boerman of Punta Gorda; three sons, Calvin Boerman of By MARY HAWK News-Press Staff Punta Gorda resident Joseph Boerman, who died over the weekend, was compassionate and was a person who never saw any wrong in his fellow man, family members said. "He was very outgoing and he just loved people, and doing things for other people," said his wife, Carolyn Boerman. "He cared for his friends." Mr.

Boerman died of a heart attack Saturday at Cape Coral Hospital. He was born on July 28, 1921 in Chicago, and came to the Punta Gorda area in 1984 from Illinois. For more than 30 years, Mr. Boerman worked as a foreman in the Fisher Body Division of General Motors in Willow Springs, 111. James Porterfield, 79, ports around the nation since 1986.

Between June 1988 and June 1989 $2.7 million was seized at Miami INternational Airport. At John F. Kennedy International in New York, agents seized $5.4 million. Chicago's O'Hare International yielded $2.5 million, and Los Angeles International had $1 million in seizures, Shimkowskisaid. Operation Buckstop began at Tampa International in August and has produced more than $1 60,000.

Customs officials believe Tampa International is becoming popular with illegal cash runners because they shy away from Miami and its well-publicized drug interdiction efforts. Operation Buckstop also is under way at Orlando. International Airport. Study to find impact of wastes GAINESVILLE University of Tlorida researchers are trying to find out whether the state's hazardous waste sites are polluting lakes, rivers and streams, the school said. The three-year, $300,000 study could result in new state water-quality regulations, researchers say.

The study, funded by the Florida Department of Environmental Regulation and the Environmental Protection Agency, is taking a new look at possible pollution, particular to the bottoms of nearby surface water, from 30 hazardous waste sites throughout Florida. "Quite a lot of work has been done on ground water immediately underneath hazardous waste sites, but relatively little has been done to identify and measure pollutants that leak from waste sites and affect adjoining surface waters," said Joseph Delfino, UF environmental chemist who is leading the study. "We're investigating that connection and searching for perhaps 100 different 'micro-pollutants' which are invisible to the human eye chemicals ranging from industrial solvents to cleaning solutions and compounds present in gasoline. Many of these are exceedingly toxic and some are known cancer-causing agents, so it's vital that we ascertain their levels in state waters." The researchers are investigating sites ranging from a Key West landfill to an abandoned pesticide spraying operation near Lake Okeechobee. Planes checked for corrosion JACKSONVILLE Concerns about corrosion on FA-18 Hornets has forced the Navy to begin an investigation to determine whether the jet fighters have been weakened and whether the problem is due to design, production or normal wear.

Just before Strike Fighter Squadrons 132 and 137 deployed to the Mediterranean this summer, squadron members had to pull the wings off its 20 FA-18s to perform a last-minute inspection for galvanic corrosion. Galvanic corrosion is an electrochemical reaction between two dissimilar, incompatible metals. For the corrosion to occur, a third element an electrolyte must be present Unfortunately for the Navy, salt water is one of the most common electrolytes. The Navy, which first detected the problem last November, could not provide the cost of the inspections to date and said officials will determine whether the bill is to be shared by the Navy and the contractor McDonnell Douglas Corp. Porterfield went on to pursue a journalism career and eventually became executive vice president of a New York-based public relations firm. "He took great pride in a good job of writing," said his son, Christopher Porterfield of New York. "He was also a kindly and decent and solid man of great integrity and principle. And he had a great way of using his country boy charm." Mr. Porterfield died Sunday of cancer.

A Fort Myers resident for 13 years, he was 79. Born in the remote West Virginia town of Willow Bend, he grew up on a family farm without electricity or running water. "It was a preserved little cocoon of the 19th century," his son said. "A hardscrabble little farm back in the hills and hollers. He attended a one-room schoolhouse and didn't own a long pair of pants until he was 16.

But FLORIDA BRIEFS From News-Press wire services N.Florida worries about new flooding JACKSONVILLE Floodwaters from torrential downpours that claimed two lives receded Monday, but officials expressed concern that continued heavy rain could cause a new round of flooding across North Florida. The National Weather Service said the rains were unrelated to last week's passage of Hurricane Hugo, but sprang from high pressure over the Atlantic and low pressure over the Gulf of Mexico feeding moist air to a stationary front over northern Florida. "Given the current weather picture it is likely that North and North-Central Florida will receive additional heavy rainfall, possibly resulting in some flooding in areas prone to that phenomenon," forecasters said at mid-afternoon. John Keane, a spokesman for the Jacksonville Public Service Department, said the forecast left his agency "apprehensive." His department spent Sunday helping rescue motorists who drove into floodwaters which reached a depth of 10 feet in some areas of Jacksonville. The rain slacked off enough late Sunday and early Monday to let most of the high water drain away, but the ground remained saturated.

Official 24-hour rainfall totals from 8 a.m. Sunday to 8 a.m. Monday ranged from 5.72 inches at Apalachi-cola to 2.45 inches at Jacksonville where unofficial totals Sunday ranged up to 11.4 inches. Tallahasse had 1.65 inches in a 24-hour period ending at 4 p.m. Monday.

Sunday's drenching of Jacksonville, however, left "streets flowing like rivers," according to one police officer. Streets along more than 30 city blocks were flooded, and major intersections and portions of Inter-states 95 and 10 were temporarily closed. Agents make hauls of unreported cash TAMPA Federal agents are making some hefty hauls of cash in Operation Buckstop, a nationwide attempt to stop the illegal flow of cash out of the country. At Tampa International Airport, they found one man with $17,000 stuffed in his underwear. Another had taped $10,000 to his ankles.

A third crammed wads of money more than $80,000 into his pants pockets. The three were awaiting flights out of the country last month when authorities nabbed them and seized their money. It's not a crime to take money out of the United States. But it is illegal if you don't tell the government you're leaving with 1 0,000 or more. Using a federal law known as the Bank Secrecy Act, the U.S.

Customs Service and Tampa police made the recent hauls in a project called Oper-. ation Buckstop. The goal is to stem the flow of cash, most of it from illegal drugsales, across the borders.
