CITY OF FORT MYERS BY: M.W. MATZ, CITY CLERK HANGING OF THE GREENS" he opened up his own shop, In 1939, business had become so brisk that Edelblut formed his own company, Edelblut Construction. At the outbreak of World War II, Edelblut helped build Page Field and the Buckingham air strip, and bases at Key West, Tampa and Orlando.

He later built one of the first hotels in town, the Victory Court. He Joined the Fort Myers Zoning Board in 1952 as one of the original members and helped write the city's zoning laws. He was also an avid baseball fan, his son said, and watched the Kansas City Royals when they were in town for spring training. "I go to every one of their games here and I have for four years," he told a reporter in 1975. "In fact, I've had the same seat there for six years." Edelblut was 80 when he retired from the zoning board in 1975, leaving his seat "to the younger generation." He had retired from his business 20 years earlier.

He spent his retirement tracing his family history back 300 years to 17th-century Danish royalty. He and his wife, Mary Alma Edelblut, were married 52 years. She died in 1969. He had a statue in her memory built in Italy in 1970, and donated the statue to the Fort Myers Cemetery. Services for Edelblut will be at 2:30 p.m.

Friday at Harvey Funeral Home, 1600 Colonial Fort By JENNIFER J. GRAY News-Press Staff Writer Walter J. Edelblut, the "Little Plumber," died Monday night at 91, according to his son, Richard Edelblut. Edelblut, an original Fort Myers Zoning Board member and contractor, moved to Fort Myers in 1919 to find work as a plumber. He got his unusual nickname not from his 5-feet-8-lnch stance, but from town wags when he made a great success in the Fort Myers plumbing business.

Edelblut liked the nickname, his son said. When Edelblut got his first truck, he thought it would make a catchy slogan and painted "Here comes the little plumber" on the front end, and "There goes the little plumber" on the back. Edelblut was born in Richmond, in 1895. He was graduated from Virginia Mechanical Institute in 1915. He served in the U.S.

Army during World War and came to Fort Myers in 1919 to visit his wife's sister. He never left. "He was an avid Fort Myers man," Richard Edelblut said. "He liked everything about it." Edelblut was hired by Walter Langford to install plumbing fixtures in the bathrooms of his new, lavish home at Fowler and First streets. Another report meeting was scheduled for Dec.

10. So far, the campaign has collected more than $800,000 toward its "Thanks a Million" campaign goal of $1,030,000, said executive director Burnette Bloodworth. An exact total was not known Tuesday, she said. At the meeting, campaign chairman Doug Winton encouraged campaign volunteers to keep pressing on in their million-dollar effort, which originally was to end Tuesday. "We sincerely hope we finish this mission and complete our task by Dec.

10," said Doug Winton, campaign chairman. "Let's make Dec. 10 a victory as well as a wrap-up." Three large donations were presented at the meeting: Southland Corp. donated $400, Fort Myers Community Hospital and employees gave $36,000, and Sun Bank gave 1 5,000. "We got a lot of great surprises today," Winton said.

"We have come so far but we have a long way to go and not a lot of time to do it. We need to keep this thing on track." The education division, the first division to go over its goal, is among the many success stories in the campaign, officials said.
