4C NEWS-PRESS, SUNDAY, MARCH 29. 1987 Nude woman 7 found stabbed Lehigh festival marks springtime 'reunion' Myra Kessler, publicity chairman for the week-long festival, said the tug of war was not the only big draw. Overall attendance topped previous years, she said. "I don't have the exact attendance counts, but we're sure that this year's turnout was far better than ever before," she said. Saturday's parade drew almost 4,000, she said.

"We were very lucky that the weather held out," Kessler said. "And we had wonderful participation from neighboring communities." Kessler said LaBelle, Immoko-lee, Fort Myers and Fort Myers Beach residents were represented at the parade and at other events throughout the week. "The festival is Lehigh's way of putting out the welcome mat to the visitors to Florida," Kessler said. "Many of our residents have relatives and guests come to Lehigh this time of year and the festival gives usachanceforakindofhome-town reunion." The last day of the festival included a road race, parade, carnival, music and an event the sponsors lovingly referred to as the "Mud Bowl," a tug-of-war contest. More than 2,000 spectators lined the roped-off battle ground off Homestead Road. Contestants dug in their heels, tightened their grips and tried to pull each other into a trench filled with mud and foaming water. When the mud settled, it was the team from Assembly of God Church that walked away with a trophy. "We got the bigger guys from our youth group together for this," said team captain Rick Rocco.
