Whidden said an examination of the car showed a slipping air conditioner pulley a break between the muffler and tailpipe. Whidden said this could account for carbon monoxide fumes from the exhaust entering the car. Dr. Berry said carbon monoxide poisoning can take place without the victim's awareness. McCrum's father-in-law, Albert Madden, said the young men had been at McCrum's home Wednesday night until about 10 and had then left in the car.

Madden said he thought they probably had ridden around and stopped to "shoot the breeze," and listen to the radio or tape deck in the car. He said they might have rolled up the windows and turned on the air conditioner when mosquitoes bothered them. Bassetta and Herring graduated from Fort Myers Senior High School in 1967. Bassetta has worked as a shrimper for his father, Michael Bassetta of Fort Myers. McCrum had been working in the surgery wing of Naples Community Hospital as a technician.

He had a wife and four-year-old son. The other two were unmarried. The News-Press Published seven mornings a week by Publishing 2442 Anderson Fort Myers, Fla. Mail P. 0.
