2-B Fort Myers (Fla.) News-Press, July 29, 1971 Vs More Chane Than Ever Before' 4 4i 111 i 111 Is rUwy Vflf fa By LUCIE NOEL PARIS Iff) The Chanel Salon was agog with excitement and a certain uneasiness Tuesday as buyers, distinguished guests and journalists awaited the first collection since Coco Chanel died six months ago. Would artistic coordinator Gaston Berthelot and his team make it? The verdict came in a wild ovation from the audience. If Coco Chanel had been sitting in her traditional step on the famous staircase, she would have said: "It's more Chanel than ever." The continuity of style was almost unbelievable. The difference and naturally everyone was watching for it was mainly evident in detail which complemented rather than moved away from the Chanel line. The spirit throughout was as young as ever, the cut as neat, and the clothes as right and functional for today.

There were more afternoon dresses, with linens softer, as were fabrics a great variety of sheer fabrics, many a-glitter with metal threads. Treatments generally seemed softer than of yore. Soft Eton collars in white linen on suits replace white shirtbands, and felt Fedora hats were shown with the suits. The checked and plaid tweeds and wools, silks and knits used in the suits are all in the qualities Coco used, midweight patchwork wools share honors with the soft, hand-woven style that she always endorsed. Jackets are wrist length and symmetrically pocketed at breast and hips.

Sometimes they belong to a suit. At other times it's a costume, the jacket revealing a dress with an occasional silk or brocaded top attached. The famous Chanel chains are always there. They're gold, and the colored mock jewels and beads pick out the colors in the tweed or the suit. The detailing on the jackets is as careful as ever.

The suits look new, styled for winter, and the colors and blends in tweeds are wonderful. Apricot and beige, plum and navy, grege and rose. Rose silk shirt with pleated shirtfront under a patchwork jacket, and rust plaid with the cinnamon picked out for the shirt are some especially good models. White is a favorite. A vanilla wool suit is terribly chic with its matching shirt.

They-revive the black suit, for Paris, extremely simple. One is on tuxedo lines faced in white satin, another is fitted and frilled in dull Charmeuse satin for wear with furs, a third narrowly braided with a frilled white satin jabot. And gray flannel stages a much-applauded comeback, with a dark red boutonniere carnation, red belt and white shirt. The evening story is elegant with fragile black lace, soft Charmeuse in a white evening shirtwaist dress. Hemlines are short except for sheer lames in rich patterns.

A "difference" is the use of precious furs. Mink is shown in berets, leopard used in beret and trimmings. A winter coat is lined and edged in civet. Dyed fox is effective in coat sleeves, and a big Russian red fox toque matches the cuffs of a wool coat. In all: a deluxe collection to which Coco would have willingly signed her name.

The old timer chuckled and led back a heart to knock out dummy's last stopper. The young expert led a spade to his rueen and burst into doggerel when the old duffer played the nine. Without question, the old fool was senile! How could anyone rise with the ace when he could have played the nine? The young expert led a spade and finessed dummy's eight. It was then the old man produced the jack of spades.

"In my youth" said the sage, "I learned how to play from Culbertson, Whitehead and Shoup.

If you think I started about yesterday, you are sure to wind up in the soup." The young whelp was in the soup all right.
