Clubs! Really! Don't you know that every woman who has never gotten out of her graham-cracker-crumby bed before noon for 12 years will write to you and say, "Sweetie, I have been local chapter president of the Mother's Club for Boys under Seven Who Smoke for nine years and I can't tell you what a blast it's been! They are lying to you, Mrs. Carpenter. "People, women I mean, do want to write to you. It's very flattering of you to ask, but do we really care who sleeps and who clubs? I mean isn't what you're really after some Color? You did mention something about black, white and gray but if you want interesting columns, and maybe some interesting readers, why don't you ask for them? Now, your friendliness is nice and its rather touching really when, in your position, you don't have to bother with the dregs of woman hood, but could rub Mrs. Charlotte Weeks of the Tres Chic Dress Shoppe narrated the show.

Black and white were the predominant colors in the show, with occasional splashes of bright orange, greens, purples, shocking pinks and yellows. Mrs. Virginia Hull modeled an all-cotton grape slack outfit, coordinated with colorful blouse, complimented with matching dangling earrings. "But don't you see, you've got to ask some intriguing, arresting questions. You could write in your friendly style, 'And I want to hear from all you girls who are married to Siamese twins, You'd be flooded with replies because you know very well that nobody calls on those women much. "Another query might go: 'If you've had seven kids in six years, would you let me Those ladies never get enough attention; they'd love to feel needed.

"I guess I could go on for pages, but you asked-specifkally for gray women to write. Now I suppose you mean me, because I don't belong to clubs and I don't feel home is a haven, except after 10 p.m. when the night raiders have given it up for another day. You also asked why my kind of woman is a little bit tired most of the time. I think it's because I don't get enough sleep.

Any woman who is concerned with her crowning glory will tell you that the hair's best friend is a good brush. But the brush should be designed to fit your particular hair needs.

In fact, it's a good idea to have two brushes. A nylon bristle brush with rounded tips for stimulating the scalp can also double for styling. However, nothing is finer than a natural bristle brush for cleaning the hair and for 'bringing out its natural highlights. Think it's too much triuble? Not really. That famous .100 strokes a night can't take more than 10 minutes and the satisfying end result is certainly worth the time spent.

Don't ever worry about vigorous brushing ruining your now set. If your hair is cut and shaped properly and has the bounce it ought to have, your set will fall right into place. If you find you're fighting your way through strands of hair, it means you have oversprayed. Be careful not to have a heavy finger on that aerosol button. Brushing has a threefold purpose To stimulate your scalp and increase circulation, so that both your scalp and your hair remain in good health.

To remove surface dirt and dust. To distribute natural oils evenly for a pretty shine and glow that is so necessary for beautiful hair. According to the Owens Brush Company there is only one correct way to brush your hair. Brush up from the hair line and turn the brush with a twist of your wrist, brushing up and out. Separate the hair, section by section, until your scalp feels awake.

The idea is to brush from the roots out to the tips. An interesting side note is a study made by a group of sociologists that found men often pick a wife with the same hair color as their own. So you see, girls, gentlemen don't necessarily prefer blondes. That is, unless they, too, are blond. It doesn't really matter what color your hair is as long as it's clean, well-brushed and full of lustrous highlights.

Polly's Pointers Hide With Bamboo By POLLY CRAMER DEAR POLLY My Pointer is for A. F. whose laundry tubs, washer and dryer are an eyesore in one end of her basement family room. By three, or the necessary number, pair of bamboo draperies to fit all across a drapery track installed on the ceiling or on a beam, leaving only enough room between the laundry equipment and the draperies so they will open and close easily. Overcast or tie three panels together with bulky, bright-colored wool which is an accent color for the room.

Do the same to the other half of the panels and you have one wide pair of curtains. These draperies, closed, make an attractive background "wall." When using the laundry area, push the draperies to one side. MRS. PAT DEAR POLLY We built a room divider to hide our laundry equipment. This is just a bit higher than the tallest thing to be hidden.

There are shelves on either side. Those on the laundry side hold soap and so on, 'and those on the family room side hold decorative items. Ours has a planter on top. RUTH DEAR POLLY We hobbyists get great ideas from the column so now we have a request. The members of our Arts and Crafts group would like suggestions for the use of the wide satin ribbon which comes in bows on florist's bouquets.

GLADYS DEAR POLLY I wanted to send an antique china tea set to my daughter who lives across the continent from me. I was afraid it would get broken. Finally I decided to save my empty dish washing lotion plastic bottles. When I had enough of them I wrapped and packed the tea set and placed this package in a larger box lined with the plastic bottles. It arrived in perfect condition.

IRENE DEAR GIRLS Do note that Irene first wrapped and carefully packed the china before putting it in the larger box lined with the empty plastic bottles. POLLY DEAR POLLY During the summer I discovered this Pointer. I saved nut shells and used them for drainage in the bottoms of my hanging flower baskets. They are much lighter than rocks or bits of broken clay pots for use in such baskets where weight counts. MRS.

The first meeting of the year will be at 8 p.m. Monday at the Masonic Temple. We don't worry when our child speaks a month later than a friend's, or uses baby-talk. We don't worry over sentence structure or the pronunciation of words.

We're delighted with any sign of progress at that point and we show it. But when he starts school, and starts formally to learn to read, we worry, correct, compare and are quick to jump on errors and rate of progress. For many youngsters it is this undercurrent of pressure and disapproval that causes them to become tense and have even more difficulties. SCHRAUB: What do you think about some teachers who dole out marks to children as if they were cash out of their own pockets, and felt they could get a better bargain if they shopped around? Can't they equate a child's satisfaction and delight in a really good mark with the motivation and love of learning it brings them and their own sense of what a mark should be? If a child tries hard and the paper can be marked 88 and is not a matter of specific point marking but one of opinion, as in a composition, why can't the teacher give the child a 90? This always surprises me. Mrs. H.A. ANSWER Dear Mrs. What you say may have some truth in it.

You should understand, though, that many teachers dislike report cards as much as the students and wish they didn't have to grade youngsters this way. It is true, too, that teachers, being human, vary in their approaches to marking, some being known as "hard markers," and some as "easy markers." The refinements to which some report card marks are carried can also be extreme. I have seen 84Vs for math, for example. On the whole, though, I feel teachers try to be fair in this difficult area. In view of the emphasis college admission boards are placing on grades today, the pressure to be both fair and accurate is present.

If there are to be marks at all, they must have some basis in fact! DEAR MRS. SCHRAUB: Whv is it a child can learn to speak the English language, which surely is not an easy one, with no trouble at all, but when it comes to learning to read it, there's trouble? Do you think it has something to do with the way we go about teaching it? K.B. ANSWER Dear Mr. B. Teaching is always involved to an important extent, but if we are going to compare reading with speaking, we must compare our attitudes toward both.
