When, Not If When asked whether the word should be used in place of "when" the astronauts walk the moon, Aldrin said: "I think we are quite able to use the term We have been thinking positively. Everything we have been doing has been very positive." Collins drew laughter when he reminded people he will be "one of the few Americans" unable to watch Armstrong and Aldrin on the moon.

Their activities will be televised live to earthlings. While the others are on the moon, Collins said, he would just be "minding the store" in the orbiting mother ship. "But I'll be quite busy doing that." Moon Dust Blast? In London, a former U.S. space official said dust carried by the lunar astronauts after their walk the surface of the moon could explode or burst into flame inside the spaceship. Paul Haney, former director of public affairs for.

the U.S. National Aeronautic and Space Administration, said: "This is one danger that's never mentioned publicly by NASA officials." He added the possibility of such a fire is remote, but one NASA cannot be sure of "until the moonship is buttoned up ready for take off." He explained: "Scientists think it possible that aeons ago the moon dust may have contained oxygen. When exposed to the supercharged oxygen atmosphere inside the moonship, the dust may begin to glow and give off heat. "This is the moment when the top scientists will be holding their breath. For the astronauts, the first hint of trouble will be a telltale glow on the cabin floor.

They have fire extinguishers, of course, but nobody knows just how effective they would be in these circumstances."
