Peterson William D. Wrisht I covered by a Marco pioneer, prising and energetic woman, Mrs. Barfield decided to nring the barge to Marco where she would find a use for it. Captain Ferd Hall of the schooner Dureka offered to tow the barge to the island and with Harvey Doxsee of Marco and Mrs. Barfield aboard they made what turned out to be a rather hazardous voyage.

A northeaster blew up and the crew had to hold the barge in the lee of the schooner until the storm was over and they could continue their slow journey to the island. Kor a time the old barge was anchored in the bay in front of what is now Captain's Landing. Then Mrs. Barfield had it moved to its present site by the draw bridge. A place on the shore was jetted out for it and a large section of water and mangrove around it was filled to make more land.

Mrs. BarficTd's daughter, Elsie, and her husband, Ken Vog-stad, remodeled the barge for a hotel, bar and restaurant. Ed Belavek of Furniture Fair in Naples lived on the island at that time and helped Ken with the carpenter work. The top deck of the barge was removed and bedrooms built on the aft deck. Elsie became known far and wide for her excellent cooking and her cakes and pastry were especially delectable.

The Vogstads built a dock, rented boats and arranged for fishing guides. At that time theirs was the only establish ment in that area and business was always good. In 1959 the Vogstads sold the Ship Ahoy to the Hal Whitfields who have operated it since that time. Ken and Elsie built their beautiful Tides Motel on the filled land next to the ship.
